Our Lady of Charity
In the legend of Our Lady of Charity, we once again see the Native adoption of the divine selection narrative. In the legend three fishermen, two Natives and an African slave, are caught in a storm while fishing. The fishermen, colloquily known as the "Three Juans" pray to the Virgin for safety after noticing the Marian pendant owned by the African slave, and discover a floating statue of Mary when the storm suddenly ends. This tale once again demonstrates the Catholic idea that a person who is low on the social ladder, even as low as a slave, can be touched by divinity if they simply have faith.
